Stone Ridge Summer CampUs encourages all campers to “choose their own adventure” for the summer. Often this means campers take camp classes that embrace the natural beauty of our own campus (Eco Art & Nature’s Crafts) as well as classes that take advantage of our local Rock Creek Park and surrounding natural areas (Wilderness Survival Camp/Adventure Camps). Campers who are interested in sustainability can feed their interests by taking classes such as Solar Power Playhouse and Gator Bike Shop. Campers who are interested in both engineering and nature are taking the class “STEM in the Wild”. Upper School students have the opportunity to take “Environmental Field Studies” in which they will conduct studies to look at wildlife species populations, stream water quality, soil analysis, and more, to learn how humans interact with their environment both positively and negatively

ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD STUDIES (GRADES 9-12)

ECO ART AND NATURE’S CRAFTS

Experience the adventure and creative process of using materials found in nature! Campers will go on scavenger hunts to collect interesting objects around Stone Ridge’s lush, beautiful campus. Projects include ceramic and mixed media musical wind chimes, fairy crowns, wands, or potions, printmaking using leaves, fruits, and vegetables, and designing and building site-specific artwork in the environment.

STEM in the Wild

An all-outdoor maker exploration that reveals STEM all around us! Look closely, use your STEM knowledge, and get your hands dirty building incredible, imaginative stuff with nature and STEM materials!

GATOR BIKE SHOP

Bikes are amazing machines! Explore all their working parts and learn to fix them up in the Gator Bike Shop. Bring in your own bike to learn how to do your own tune-ups, and work on repairing broken bikes for donation to give the gift of transportation.

SOLAR POWER PLAYHOUSE

Harness the sun in this solar-powered electrical engineering workshop! Learn, design, and build solar-power systems to light up the Solar Power Playhouse, charge batteries, and get machines moving.

WILDERNESS SURVIVAL CAMP (GRADES 2-8)

Join 2017 Appalachian Trail thru-hiker and Middle School teacher extraordinaire, Agustin “Gus” Umanzor, in this new, unique primitive backcountry camp. Each day a different topic will be covered; campers must dress appropriately for hiking and the outdoors. Want to learn how to make a primitive backcountry shelter and then actually construct one after hiking to Rock Creek? How about learning about eating & drinking in the backcountry? Learn about fire making and water filtration from local streams, make s’mores, and taste dehydrated food! Interested in local flora, fauna & fishing? Make your very own fishing pole and try your luck in our neighboring creek!
